Bituminous Emulsions
We offer formulators and producers direct access to Supraton™ Mixing Technology and a range of Thermoplastic Polymers as well as technical understanding and mill tool innovations.
• Our Radial SBS polymers have distinct properties enabling their use in highly modified bituminous emulsions, made efficiently in Supraton S Series emulsion mills.
• AWANDA’s surface coatings expertise in emulsions and emulsion stabilisation from research and technical market development work with local and overseas laboratory and production plant personnel over the last 25 years.
• More than 20 years of active participation as a supplier of SBS bitumen modifiers and as a member of industry technical forums.
Polymer Modification
We have been exposed to a very wide variety of resins and polymers used in many industries. The knowledge and experience gained over many years enable us to provide advice to customers wanting to improve their products or develop new ones.
The use of the range of thermoplastic rubbers has become the focus of our consulting activities, owing to the versatility of these products and our deep technical knowledge of how these products work at a molecular level. With the growing trend to use renewable source materials, our experience with resin building blocks, derived from agricultural waste can be applied across a range of product requirements. Another area of expertise is the recycle and reuse of commodity polymers, like PET, used in soft drink bottles. We have the expertise to repurpose and add value to this and other polymers collected from post-consumer and factory waste. Again, this is an area where our thermoplastic rubber products find their use.
Bitumen Modification
We have been involved in the bitumen modification industry for over 20 years. We have diligently followed local and international trends, specification changes and interacted with local and world leaders in bitumen modification at industry forums and conferences.
For more than 26 years have been supplying SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) which has been successfully used on many kilometres of long-lasting roads. Radial SBS has been used since modified binders were first introduced in South Africa and have stood the test of time. Radial SBS modifier is used in a variety of bitumen based products used in crack sealants, surface seals, asphalt concrete and bitumen emulsions. Thousands of kilometres of roads have been laid in South Africa with Radial SBS, including the very heavily trafficked Van Reenen’s pass, the main route for all goods to and from the coast to Gauteng.
Mixing Technology
BWS Technologie is a German engineering company that offers superior mixing and particle size reduction equipment for various liquid, liquid & solid, and liquid dispersions. BWS Technologie has conducted business in our market for many years, with diverse end uses.
Application Examples: degumming of edible oils, toothpaste manufacture, polymer modification of bitumen and waste recycling. AWANDA and BWS Technologie have been exploring new opportunities in the South African market for the last few years and, as of 2017, have broadened their exploration to include other African countries. An area of focus will be the processing of the substantial quantities of biomass available for the production of fuel and useful chemicals from agricultural waste.
Sugar Technology
The Buckau-Wolf brand has a long legacy in the beet sugar industry and later also in cane sugar milling operations. Patented Buckau-Wolf honeycomb calandria (HCC) are effective in improving water removal in the final stages of raw and refined sugar production.
The Buckau-Wolf brand has a long legacy in the beet sugar industry and later also in cane sugar milling operations. Patented Buckau-Wolf honeycomb calandria (HCC) are effective in improving water removal in the final stages of raw and refined sugar production.
Buckau-Wolf Sugar Technology (BWS) also manufactures batch and continuous centrifuges (known as centrifugals in the sugar industry) and leading-edge process control instrumentation for these.
BWS, having sold a few centrifuges to food processing industries recognised the need to partner with a local South African company to provide “local touch” service to existing customers and to grow their Buckau-Wolf Sugar Technology business here. Taking advantage of our longstanding relationships with sugar milling companies, we introduced the industry to Buckau-Wolf patented honeycomb calandria (HCC).
The first HCC installation was completed during the 2019 off-crop in the UCL mill in Dalton and has provided the expected increase in vacuum pan efficiency. This local example of the use of HCC has paved the way for further retrofitting of pans, replacing tube and plate and ribbon calandria. When pans are to be replaced, BWS will send the HCC to be fitted into new pans, fabricated in South Africa, based on tried and tested Backau-Wolf engineering designs.
